Mardi Gras at Venice Beach, California

Mardi Gras came to Venice Beach this weekend. Heres a little history on it.

Mardi Gras, meaning "Fat Tuesday" in French, has its roots in ancient Roman and medieval European traditions of feasting before Lent. The celebration was brought to North America by French explorers in the early 18th century, with the first recorded Mardi Gras in what is now the United States taking place in Mobile, Alabama, in 1703. However, New Orleans became the heart of Mardi Gras festivities after its founding in 1718, evolving into the grand parades, masked balls, and vibrant street parties we see today. The tradition continues as a mix of French, Spanish, and Creole influences, making it a lively cultural event.
